Executive Summary

The initial meeting of the Products of Genetic Technology (PGT) Subcommittee focused on providing the policy context to the work the subcommittee will be undertaking on Precision Bred Organisms (PBOs). Information was shared on the progress of the Bill and on the role that the Subcommittee, and ultimately the ACNFP, will have in exploring the scientific underpinnings to the development of a regulatory framework for PBOs. Information was also shared on the work of the Advisory Committee on Releases to the Environment (ACRE) on this topic.
A workshop was held to initiate the work on the Precision Breeding framework. Members agreed on definitions and vocabulary. Members explored the scientific rationale for a tiered approach to the assessment of PBOs, acknowledging that most PBOs would most likely have similar risk profiles to Traditionally Bred Organisms (TBOs).
The Committee received an introduction to the work on dossiers received under the Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) framework. Three applications for renewal of GMO authorisation were reviewed. These were for genetically modified A5547-127 soybean for food and feed uses, genetically modified 40-3-2 soybean for foods and food ingredients, animal feed, and products other than food, and genetically modified MIR162 maize for food and feed uses. The Secretariat will be progressing with draft opinions for these applications for Subcommittee review.
