Executive Summary

  • The 157th meeting was held for two days allowing consideration of a number of new applications.
  • The Committee reviewed Madhuca Longifolia, a traditional food from a third country application requesting authorisation within the GB market. The product consists of flowers naturally rich in sugars, taken from the mahua tree, a deciduous tree of the Sapotaceae family native to India. The flowers are harvested, dried and roasted and authorisation is sought for nibs, ground powder and a herbal tea infusion. The Committee Advice document will inform Risk Managers decisions on whether to raise reasoned safety objections.
  • The Committee reviewed further information supplied by the applicant for the lacto-N-fucopentaose I (LNFP-I) and 2'-fucosyllactose (2'-FL) mixture (LNFP-I/2'-FL) application and the 3-fucosyllactose (3’-FL) application. Members requested further information on the production processes for both applications. The Committee reviewed the draft Committee Advice document for each application and identified areas for the Secretariat to amend.
  • The Committee reviewed the application for Calcidiol for the fourth time and agreed that further information supplied by the applicant was sufficient for the safety evaluation. The Secretariat were advised to produce a draft of the Committee Advice document for Committee review.
  • The Committee reviewed for the first time the extension of use application Isomalto-Oligosaccharides for use in a range of foods and food supplements. Members suggested further information was needed on the proposed uses. The Secretariat were advised to produce a draft of the Committee Advice document for Committee review.
  • The Committee reviewed for the first time, an application for Corn Protein in a range of products as a protein-based functional ingredient. Further information was identified as being needed on composition, production process and nutrition. The Secretariat were advised to produce a draft of the Committee Advice document for Committee review.
  • The Committee reviewed for the first time an application for Krill Protein Hydrolysate for use in a range of foods and food supplements. Further information was sought on composition, production process, proposed uses and allergenicity. Members agreed that a detailed review of the Absorption, Distribution, Metabolism and Excretion (ADME) and toxicity data for Krill Protein Hydrolysate was needed and the toxicity experts on the committee would perform a review of the data in more detail.
  • The Committee reviewed for the first time, an application for an extension to the permitted uses of oil from Schizochytrium species for use in meat and fish analogues. Further information was identified as being needed on specification, stability and proposed uses.
  • The Committee reviewed for the first time an application for Mycobacterium aurum for use in food supplements. Further information was sought on a range of areas including identification, composition, production process, proposed use and immunotoxicology.
  • The Committee reviewed for the first time an application for Cellobiose in a range of uses as a replacement for sugars. The Committee identified further information was needed on production process, stability, proposed uses and ADME. The Secretariat were advised to produce a draft of the Committee Advice document for review at the next available meeting.
  • The Committee reviewed the draft Committee Advice documents for four GM renewal applications: Genetically Modified soybean A5547-127, Genetically Modified soybean 40-3-2, Genetically Modified maize MIR162 and Genetically Modified cotton GHB614. Members provided advice on how to ensure these were understandable for a non-technical audience. They also commented on the scope of their advice ensuring this was consistent with the Committee’s remit. Agreement of revised drafts in light of the comments will be finalised by Chair’s action.
  • The Committee reviewed minor amendments to the ACNFP Terms of Reference proposed by the Secretariat to remain consistent with the evolving responsibility of the Committee on Precision Bred Organisms. The Committee agreed the proposed changes, pending minor amendments and final agreement of the text would be agreed by the Chair.

This work continues to evaluate new safety data submitted by applicants on CBD and is approaching its first output on pure form CBD for review by the ACNFP at the earliest convenience.
