Issue

The Committee reviewed this application for the first time at the September 2022 Further reviews were conducted at the November 2022, April 2023 and August 2023 meetings. Members concluded the risk assessment process at the last meeting and requested the Secretariat draft a summary opinion.

The Committee is invited to consider the draft summary opinion for this novel food.

Background

1. The applicant is seeking authorisation for magnesium L-threonate which is produced by chemical synthesis and intended to be used as a source of magnesium in food supplements only. This has been discussed at a series of meetings in 2023.

2. Following the last discussion, where no further questions for the applicant were raised, the Secretariat has drafted a Committee Advice Document for magnesium L-threonate as a novel food which can be found in Annex A. Members are asked to comment on the text and whether this represents an accurate summary of the assessment of this novel food.

Committee Action Required

• The Committee is asked to review the Committee Advice Document for this novel food and comment on whether this accurately reflects the conclusions of the assessment.
