Executive Summary
149th Executive Summary
- The Committee reviewed the application for ‘Mung Bean Protein’ as received under the novel foods authorisation process, as a protein to complement or substitute animal/vegetable proteins and were asked whether the applicant’s response to their previous request for further information on various safety issues of concern was adequate. Discussion resulted in the information supplied not being considered as satisfactory as would be expected for a risk assessment. It was advised that further information, as identified, should be requested from the applicant.
- An application was reviewed for ‘Barley Rice Protein’ as received under the novel foods authorisation process, and which comprises a mixture of protein from barley and rice to be utilised within a wide range of food groups. The Committee was asked whether further information supplied by the applicant was sufficient. Discussion resulted in the information supplied not being considered as satisfactory as would be needed for a risk assessment. It was advised that further information, as identified, should be requested from the applicant.
- Another application under the novel foods authorisation process was reviewed by the Committee. A Cannabidiol (CBD) product made through chemical synthesis to produce a 99% pure CBD crystal intended to be used in a food supplement was discussed. The focus of the discussion was twofold: i) feedback on the toxicological data provided by the applicant and ii) to consider whether further information provided by the applicant was adequate for progression of the risk assessment. The Committee felt further information was still needed especially on areas around ADME, bioavailability and proposed use. However, the toxicological information provided was of good quality and satisfactory to perform a risk assessment, albeit there remained residual uncertainties in some aspects of the data that needed to be considered.
- Finally, a paper was provided to update members on the wider work of the Agency around support for the risk analysis process and regulated products applications.
