Phytosterol application: DDO Processing

November 2005: Application from DDO Processing for an opinion on the equivalence of phytosterols for use as an ingredient in various food categories. Awaiting notification.

DDO Processing has requested an opinion from the UK Competent Authority on the equivalence of their phytosterols preparation extract from tall oil and the existing phytosterol ingredients from tall oil marketed by Forbes Medi-Tech (Commission Decision 2004/845/EC).

Background

Phytosterols are used by the food industry for their cholesterol-lowering properties. They are naturally present at low levels in vegetable oils and in food derived from such sources.

Following an initial public consultation period and the discussion of this application by the Advisory Committee on Novel Food and Processes (ACNFP) at the 24 November 2005 and 25 January 2006 meetings, and by post, the UK Competent Authority has formulated an initial opinion on this novel food ingredient.
