Phytosterol application: Cognis

May 2004: Application from Cognis GmbH & Co requesting an opinion on the equivalence of phytosterols to be used in milk and yoghurt-type products, and yellow fat spreads. Authorised July 2004.

The application was made under the Novel Foods Regulation (EC) No 258/97.

Following an initial public consultation period and the discussion of this application at the 27 May 2004 meeting of the Advisory Committee of Novel Foods and Processes (ACNFP), the committee decided that Cognis GmbH & Co phytosterol esters meet the criteria for equivalence as defined in article 3(4) of Regulation (EC) 258/97. A copy of the letter informing the applicant of this decision can be found below.

Background
Phytosterols are used by the food industry for their cholesterol-lowering properties. They are naturally present at low levels in vegetable oils and in food derived from such sources.
