October 2017 - Application from Friesland Campina requesting an opinion on the equivalence of Galacto-oligosaccharide (GOS) to Vivinal GOS PT to a comparator prodct that was already marketed in the EU prior to 15 May 1997.

Chia Seeds (BetterBody Foods)

June 2017: BetterBody Foods is requesting an opinion from the Food Standards Agency on the "equivalence" of its chia seeds, which are grown in particular regions of South America with the chia seeds marketed by The Chia Company that are grown in Australia. Under Evaluation.

Guayusa Leaf

June 2017: A consortium of companies from Ikiam University in Ecuador is requesting an opinion from the Food Standards Agency on the "equivalence" of its Guayusa leaves, which are grown in particular regions of South America, to Yerba mate leaf. Yerba mate leaf has a history of food use in the European Union and is similarly grown in South America. Under Evaluation.

February 2017 - Application from Algalo Industries for an opinion on the substantial equivalence of a dried biomass and oleoresin product from H.pluvialis using supercritical carbon dioxide. Under Evaluation

Article 5 of the Novel Food Regulation (EC) 258/97, allows the company concerned to notify the European Commission of their intention to market a novel food, which is substantially equivalent to an existing food in terms of nutritional value, metabolism, intended use and level of undesirable substances.

Oils derived from two GM cottonseed lines

The Committee on Novel Foods and Processes has considered these applications under Articles 3(4) and 5 of the Novel Food Regulation, (EC) 258/97, on the substantial equivalence of oil derived from two distinct genetically modified cotton lines, Insect Protected line 531 and Roundup Ready line 1445.
