Taxifolin

August 2010: Application from Ametis JSG, Russia for the authorisation of Taxifolin under the Novel Food Regulation (EC) 258/97. Under evaluation.

Taxifolin or (2R,3R) trans-dihydroquercetin is a flavanone extracted from the wood of dahurian larch (Larix gmelinii). It is has been marketed in Russia and the US for 15-20 years as a food supplement. The applicant is seeking an authorisation to market taxifolin in a range of food products.

Before any new food product can be introduced on the European market, it must be rigorously assessed for safety. In the UK, the assessment of novel foods is carried out by an independent committee of scientists appointed by the Food Standards Agency, the Advisory Committee on Novel Foods and Processes (ACNFP).

The ACNFP has now completed its assessment of this novel food ingredient and formulated a final initial opinion.

This UK Initial Opinion will now be considered by other Member States.
